Story and Lore
The story of Aion 2, set 200 years after the original game: the fall of the Tower of Eternity, the Bulwark raised by the Empyrean Lords, the Dragon Lords Ishta and Fafnir, and the separate Elyos and Asmodian campaigns that send the player after the Empyrean Lords' cores.
The story of Aion 2 takes place on Atreia 200 years after the events of the original Aion. NC's global announcement of Apr 21, 2026 sets the scene: the Tower of Eternity has collapsed, the Daevas are slowly losing their power, and they fight on while surviving under the oppression of the Balaur (Steam). NC America adds that the Elyos and Asmodians "must navigate a shattered universe while confronting the newly empowered Balaur faction" (Games Press). In CrusherXGaming's summary, the Balaur control most of Atreia and the surviving Daevas are rebuilding behind a wall called the Bulwark. NC calls the game "the ultimate edition of the original Aion" (NC, Nov 18, 2025), and at Summer Game Fest 2026 NC's Daniel LaFuente called it the "complete version" of Aion (Hardcore Gamer).

The history before Aion 2
NC's English material for Aion 2 gives only the outline above. The fuller history below is from the original game, as summarized by the creator Azphel, whose recaps are drawn from the games' quests and notes.
In the Age of Dawn the god Aion, embodied in the Tower of Eternity that joined the two halves of Atreia, created a powerful draconic race as protectors. Over thousands of years they grew hungry for power, turned on their creator and on the humans, and took the name Balaur under five Dragon Lords (see Balaur).
With the humans cornered at the foot of the Tower, Aion raised an Aetheric Field around it that the Balaur could not break, created the twelve Empyrean Lords to lead the defense, and gave the world Aether. The few humans who could master it ascended, grew wings and became Daevas, and the war that followed became the Millennium War.
After centuries of stalemate the Empyrean Lords lowered the Aetheric Field for peace talks inside the Tower. When the Balaur lord Beritra was attacked, fighting broke out, and a Balaur fireball split the unprotected Tower in two: the Cataclysm. The Empyrean Lords Israphel and Siel gave their lives to stabilize the field and save the world, and the surviving lords divided, each side blaming the other, into those who went south to Elysea and those who went north to Asmodae.
The two peoples had no contact for centuries. Their first meeting, when an Elyos legion came through a rift into Asmodae about 250 years after the Cataclysm, ended with the legion's commander Deltras dead and only two survivors reaching Sanctum; the Elyos lords declared war, and the Abyss War began (see Deltras and The Abyss (Reshanta)).
Aion 2 fills in what happened next. Azphel points to an in-game note that says the war between Elyos and Asmodians lasted 2,000 years. When both sides noticed the Aetheric Field failing, they united against the forces of the Dragon Lord Ishta, but it was too late, and the Empyrean Lords raised a Bulwark against the Balaur. Two hundred years later, Aion 2 begins.
In those two centuries the endless war and the Aether leaking into the Abyss drained the world. The Tower of Eternity crumbled and its Aetheric Field with it. Ishta's forces took Poeta and Verteron and turned captured Daevas into monstrous experiments, while in Asmodae the Dragon Lord Fafnir spread his influence through deception until Zikel, Lord of Destruction, sacrificed himself to imprison him. The Elyos side of the Bulwark, with Sanctum inside it, is covered on Elysea.
The player's role
In the original game players were hailed as elite heroes of their race. In Aion 2, as Ynoki puts it, a character begins as a member of a mercenary company caught in a catastrophic ambush, tied to a mystery about fragments of Aion and the missing cores of the Empyrean Lords.
The player ascends as a Daeva early in either campaign. A mysterious figure who calls himself Aion's ego and the player's guide appears in visions, pushing the player beyond ordinary ascension towards becoming an Archdaeva.
In one vision an after-image of Lady Siel shows what the Balaur have done: the two newly emerged Dragon Lords conquered almost all of Atreia, Ishta by exploiting Daevas' bodies as a source of refined energy and Fafnir by stealing their souls to control their bodies.
When the Tower collapsed, the guide explains, its fragments scattered, among them cores of Aion, and beings born of them are potential Archdaevas. The player is one; others appear in the story on both sides. The player's task is to cross the Bulwark and gather the scattered fragments, and because an Empyrean Lord's power returns to their core when they die or vanish, a vessel able to hold that power could restore Atreia.
The Elyos campaign
The Elyos story opens in Poeta, where the Legion of Dawn raids a Balaur research fortress to rescue the hermit Pernos and frees the captive player along the way (see Elysea).
Once revived, Pernos agrees to guide the legion beyond the Bulwark, to what he calls the true Atreia. He has been searching for the cores of the Empyrean Lords hidden outside it, which he says are the key to crossing back, and he promises to lead the legion to paradise if they help him find them.
The hunt for Kaisinel's core leads through Verteron to High Priestess Reda, who used the forbidden Scarlotus ritual to try to raise her dead daughter. After a trial against Kaisinel's illusion the player gains the core, but Pernos changes his story again: the legion will also need the core of Yustiel, Lady of Life, from Eltnen. Along the way one of the legion's leaders refuses to follow Pernos further, calling him reckless with other people's lives.
The Asmodian campaign
The Asmodian story opens in Fafnir's fortress in Ishalgen, where a mercenary company, betrayed by one of its own, dies searching for a red crystal. A Daeva on the same errand saves one survivor, the player (see Asmodae). The crystal holds the soul of Zikel's high priest, who knows where Zikel's core lies, and the chase for it runs through Altgard against a rival legion whose leader is obsessed with her.
At the end of the launch story the player passes the trials of Zikel's blood barrier and fights Zikel himself, who hands over his core with a charge to protect Atreia, bring down the Balaur and win victory for Asmodae. The next goal is Morheim and the core of Marchutan, Lord of Fate.
Each campaign also crosses into the other's history. In dream trials the Elyos player fights a nightmare of the Asmodian lord Zikel in Altgard, and the Asmodian player fights the Elyos lord Kaisinel in Verteron, and both learn how Zikel imprisoned Fafnir with a blood oath while Kaisinel and the other lords gave their lives to raise the Bulwark.
Where the stories meet
The Elyos campaign is framed around divine right and duty, casting the Asmodians as invaders; the Asmodian one is a story of survival and betrayal by those who believe the Elyos abandoned them. Both, Ynoki notes, eventually turn towards the Balaur and large-scale war between the realms. NC said at the first reveal in 2025 that the two factions start in entirely separate regions and that the story "naturally evolves into large-scale Realm-vs-Realm (RvR) battles" (NC, Jun 4, 2025).
After launch
Dungeons carry the story on. NC's global team said on its dungeon stream that the Fire Temple's bosses are fought for a reason tied to the main story quests (NC stream, 4 September 2026, at 32:47). The Transcendence dungeon Mirror of Scarlet Desire is set inside the shattered fragments of Kromede (NC, May 13, 2026), and the Sanctuary raid Snowfield of Sorrow is built around Deltras.
Chapter 1: Lands of Sand and Snow continued the main story in Korea and Taiwan on Jul 1, 2026, opening Eltnen and Morheim. Madsin, who plays Asmodian, felt the new chapter's story was cut short and ended abruptly rather than on a climax, and that on his side it centered on Kromede.
NC's global team has said the global version, open to Founder's Pack owners since Sep 30, 2026 and to everyone from Oct 5, starts close to a year behind Korea in content (Hardcore Gamer).
Frequently asked questions
When is Aion 2 set? 200 years after the original Aion, after the Tower of Eternity has collapsed.
Do Elyos and Asmodians play the same story? No. Each faction has its own campaign in its own half of the world, with different characters and a different view of the other side, but both lead towards the Balaur and the war between the realms.
Who is the villain of Aion 2? The Balaur. In the launch story their Dragon Lords Ishta and Fafnir have conquered most of Atreia, Ishta in Elysea and Fafnir in Asmodae.
What are the Empyrean Lords' cores? What remains of the lords who vanished raising the Bulwark. Their power returns to the cores, and the story's quest is to recover them: Kaisinel's first for the Elyos, Zikel's first for the Asmodians.
What happened to the Tower of Eternity? It was split in two by the Balaur in the Cataclysm of the original history, and in the 200 years before Aion 2 it crumbled.
Is the story finished? No. Chapter 1 continued it in Korea and Taiwan in July 2026, and the global version starts with the launch story.
