Atreia

Atreia, the world of Aion 2: a shattered planet split between Elysea in the south and Asmodae in the north with the Abyss between, over 36 times the size of the original game's world and crossed on foot, by mount, by swimming and on wings.

Atreia is the world in which Aion 2 is set, the same planet as in the original Aion, returned to 200 years after that game's events. NC describes the new Atreia as "over 36 times larger than the original game", built under the concept "explore everything you can see", with full aerial freedom in every region and underwater exploration, which the original lacked (NC, Jun 4, 2025). The planet is split in two: the Elyos live in Elysea in the south, the Asmodians in Asmodae in the north, and the floating battlefield of the Abyss lies between them. Each half has its own page; the history that broke the world apart is on Story and Lore.

A figure swims away from the viewer through a dark blue underwater cave, framed by large pink and orange coral fans and spiky glowing anemones, toward light filtering down through the water ahead.

A hollow world broken in two

In the lore of the original game, as the creator Azphel retells it, Atreia is not an ordinary planet but a hollow sphere whose two halves were joined by a single radiant spire, the Tower of Eternity, the physical form of the god Aion. Aion filled the inner world with life, among it the humans and the draconic race that later became the Balaur.

When failed peace talks ended with a Balaur attack that broke the Tower in two, the event known as the Cataclysm, the Empyrean Lord Asphel and his followers went north and Lady Ariel and hers went south. Their peoples grew apart in the separate halves, sunlit in the south and dark in the north, and became the Elyos and the Asmodians.

The broken Tower left a stump on each side of the planet, a Tower of Light in Elysea and a Tower of Darkness in Asmodae. Aether leaked away through the rift between the two fragments, and that rift is what created the Abyss.

Aion 2 opens long after all of this. NC's global announcement of Apr 21, 2026 describes a world where the Tower of Eternity has collapsed and the Daevas, slowly losing their power, survive under Balaur oppression (Steam). In CrusherXGaming's summary, the Balaur control most of Atreia and the surviving Daevas are rebuilding behind a great wall, the Bulwark.

Scale and design

The world was one of the first things NC showed. At the first Aion2NIGHT livestream on May 29, 2025, NC gave the 36-fold figure and promised that every region could be explored from the air (NC). The Steam store page and NC America's April 2026 press release repeat that the world is 36 times larger than the original, with "true freedom of movement" (Games Press).

A small figure in a long dark cloak stands among tall orange grass and red-leaved shrubs, facing an enormous dark structure bristling with spikes and spires, its side lined with huge round, ringed cylinders; two red-leaved trees glow in white mist at its foot, and a large winged shape flies across a cloudy orange sky lit by the sun.

EPIC PLK, looking at the Korean version in June 2026, found that the scale shows at once: cliffs, open areas, high platforms, flying routes, gathering nodes, teleports, hidden cubes and Abyss zones, laid out so that the map is not one flat surface. In his words, the game "wants you to look up".

Hidden cubes give that vertical space a purpose. Players were already sharing maps and routes to them, and gathering materials and teleport points add further reasons to leave the road.

The counterpoint, in the same video, is that the world can feel guided. Quest markers lead from one objective to the next and auto-pathing can carry a character across the map, so the landscape risks becoming scenery between quests.

Early reviews of the Korean and Taiwanese launch praised the look of the world. kets and his games, a week after the November 2025 launch, called it colorful, detailed and different from place to place, and noted that although the map was not very large at that point it already held many different biomes.

After around 500 hours, Grobs found the dungeons and raids very beautiful but thought the open world sometimes lacked attention to detail, partly because of a short render distance.

Travel on foot, by mount, in water and on wings

The world is built around land, sea and flight, and flight is more than fast travel: it drives exploration and aerial fights. Hardcore Gamer, previewing the global version at Summer Game Fest 2026, found no loading screens in the open world: characters walk, ride mounts, swim or fly across Atreia, and aerial combat happens in open-world PvE and PvP but not in instanced content (Hardcore Gamer).

Flight has limits. Fextralife's overview describes wings as a way to cross short distances, with mounts the better choice over long ones (Fextralife). Pets double as mounts (see Pets and Mounts), and the Flight Circles of the original game return (NC, Sep 12, 2025). Wings, flight time and aerial combat are covered on Flight and Wings.

Two halves, two servers

Each faction explores only its own half of the world: Elysea for the Elyos, Asmodae for the Asmodians. Fextralife notes that a player who wants to see the other side has to make a second character, or cross over through a rift (Fextralife). Elyos and Asmodians also play on separate servers, which NC introduced "to improve faction balance" (NC, Jun 4, 2025).

Ynoki argues that geography is where the choice of faction matters most. Classes, skills and most gear are shared, but the game sends each side to a completely different continent straight out of the tutorial, with ecosystems of its own.

At the Korean and Taiwanese launch on Nov 19, 2025 each half had a starting zone and one main region: Poeta and Verteron in Elysea, Ishalgen and Altgard in Asmodae (Fextralife). Chapter 1: Lands of Sand and Snow added Eltnen and Morheim on Jul 1, 2026, with 20 new Sealed Dungeons and six new Strongholds across the two (NC, Jun 17, 2026). NC's global team has said the global version, which launched on Oct 5, 2026, starts close to a year behind Korea in content (Hardcore Gamer).

The Abyss between

In NC's PvP showcase of Sep 11, 2026 the global team explained the Abyss as the space that formed between the two halves when the world split. It holds the life sources the Daevas need, which is why both factions fight to control it. The sponsored PC Gamer feature describes travel from the floating landmasses of the Abyss down to the mainland (PC Gamer, sponsored content created with NC). The Abyss has its own page, The Abyss (Reshanta).

Crossing into the other half

The way into the enemy's half is a rift. On the global version, NC's team said, rifts open about every three hours, three or four at a time, and a character who crosses has about an hour on the other side before having to wait for the next opening; the player limit per rift was still being decided. Rifts, the Abyss, arenas and battlegrounds all unlock at level 45 (NC stream, at 1:08:24). See Spacetime Rift.

In Korea and Taiwan the wall between the factions has thinned in places. Since Mar 11, 2026 Elyos and Asmodians can form PvE parties together (NC), and the global version lets dungeon matching include the other faction (NC stream, 4 September 2026, at 1:00:58).

Frequently asked questions

How big is the world of Aion 2? NC says it is over 36 times the size of the original Aion's world. EPIC PLK quotes the official figure as 36.36 times.

Can you visit the other faction's lands? Only through rifts, which open to characters of level 45 and above for about an hour at a time on the global version, or by making a character of the other faction.

Can you fly everywhere? NC promised full aerial freedom in every region, but flight is limited by wing time, and some zones restrict it: the rebuilt Chaotic Middle layer of the Abyss in Korea allows only gliding.

Are there loading screens in the open world? No. Hardcore Gamer's preview found a seamless world crossed on foot, by mount, by swimming or by flying.

Can you go underwater? Yes. Underwater exploration is one of the features NC named as new compared with the original.

Where is Atreia's history explained? On Story and Lore, which covers the Tower of Eternity, the Cataclysm and the 200 years before Aion 2.
