Gladiator

The Gladiator of Aion 2: a greatsword bruiser that can tank while dealing heavy damage, with lifesteal, party buffs on block, the Rending Blow and Overhead Slam rotation, Stigmas including Fracturing Rush, and a strong PvP record.

The Gladiator is a heavy melee class of Aion 2 that fights with a two-handed greatsword and can both tank and deal damage. It is one of the eight launch classes, playable in Korea and Taiwan since Nov 19, 2025 and on the global servers since Advanced Access opened on Sep 30, 2026, ahead of the free-to-play launch on Oct 5. NC describes it by its "powerful, wide-area skill attacks", and Grobs calls it a complete alternative to the Templar: a bruiser able to tank anything from normal dungeons to end-game raids, with less defensive mitigation than the Templar but damage that competes with the strongest damage classes. Lifesteal keeps it alive, a well-timed block buffs its whole party, and creators rate it among the strongest classes in PvP. All the classes are compared on Classes.

On the global servers

The Gladiator is one of the eight classes of the global client, under that name. In Ruca777's all-classes showcase, uploaded on Sep 30, 2026 as Advanced Access opened, a level 30 Gladiator fights the same boss as the other seven classes in a dark red arena, with the full interface on screen and the damage numbers of its hits rising from the boss.

mein-mmo's Sophia Weiss, a Final Fantasy XIV player who took a Gladiator into the Launch Scale Test of September 2026, found its action combat far more fun than she had expected. The light attack sits on the left mouse button and the heavy one on the right, which she compared to the spear attacks of Horizon Forbidden West, and she wove the special attacks on her other keys between them as their cooldowns came up (see Combat System).

Sen, a Gladiator main with more than 1,000 hours on the Taiwanese servers, played the class in the same test and said that watching Aion 2's combat and playing it are two completely different things: "There's a weight behind your abilities", in a style he found very close to Blade & Soul. After the test he said the Gladiator "felt absolutely amazing".

Trunx, new to Aion, spent 12 hours of the test on a Gladiator. He was skeptical of the macro system, which looked to him like auto combat, until he tried it: the macro fires its sequence and weaves basic attacks between the abilities, while defensives, buffs, situational skills and dodges stay with the player, which he calls a low floor and a high ceiling (see Skills, Stigmas and Macros).

CrusherXGaming's global tier list of Sep 28, 2026 puts the Gladiator in S tier and calls it the safest pick for players new to Aion, for its lifesteal and its ability to stand in as a backup tank. XifanGG's list of the next day ranks it A tier for raid progression and among the best early solo PvP classes, but C tier in large Abyss battles, where ranged classes have the advantage.

Role

NC pitches the Gladiator to players who want to be a front-line tank and the leader of a group while still dealing heavy damage. That is how a presenter described it on NC's global release preview livestream of Aug 7, 2026, explaining that Aion 2 uses the tank, healer and damage trinity without keeping classes inside their archetypes, and adding that Gladiators are strong in PvP. OmniPower's profile is a melee damage dealer and off-tank that faces its targets, deals sustained area damage and excels at area fights, long melee fights and survival. The Fextralife wiki sums it up as a melee fighter using heavy weapons and area strikes.

The weapon is fixed. Society Of Gaming, who has played on the Korean and Taiwanese servers since launch, points out that the original Aion's Gladiator could use several weapon types, most often a polearm, whereas the Aion 2 Gladiator uses only the greatsword.

Skills and rotation

Much of the kit is chained. OmniPower plays his PvE setup by holding the basic attack, Keen Strike, on the left mouse button together with a macro key. Leaping Slam closes the gap, Ruinous Blow deals heavy damage and raises damage, critical hit and status-effect chance, Wave Armor pulses damage around the Gladiator, and Rending Blow is the spammable area attack. Rage Burst deals damage, raises the Gladiator's damage and lowers the enemy's attack and accuracy, though he notes that its effect does not stack with the Templar's taunt; Overhead Slam can then be cast on a target that is knocked down, incapacitated or hit by Rage Burst. Rush Strike, usable only after a dodge or in mid-flight, closes the gap and knocks the target down (see Combat System).

xMontu, who plays the class at end-game level on the Taiwanese servers, reduces the rotation to one bread-and-butter combo: spam Rending Blow and Overhead Slam, and use the buffs on cooldown. Against bosses, which are immune to incapacitation, Overhead Slam has a 7% chance to become available on every hit, and Rage Burst makes it usable without that limit for 10 seconds. Ruinous Blow grants Prepare for Battle, which he reads as 20% more PvE damage, 100 critical hit and 15% status-effect chance for 10 seconds. Each active skill also has specialty upgrades to choose between. His leveling priorities are Overhead Slam, Rending Blow and Ruinous Blow, and he calls Rending Blow's specialty that restores mana on critical hits a must-have, because it ends the class's mana problems.

Gear, Arcana, the Daevanion Boards and the other progression systems work the same way for every class; class guides such as xMontu's and Sen's cover the Gladiator's choices in each.

Lifesteal, blocking and party buffs

Survivability is what makes the Gladiator forgiving. CrusherXGaming calls it the safest melee start in the game because of Blood Absorption, the passive through which it heals from the damage it deals: a bad pull becomes survivable, and Focused Block covers the rest. Grobs describes the same bruiser feeling, in which a Gladiator that stays on its target recovers a lot of health, and adds that it can extend lifesteal to the whole party.

The Gladiator brings two party buffs. Experienced Counter-Strike raises frontal attack damage and PvE and PvP damage for the Gladiator and its party for 20 seconds when it blocks, and Life-Stealing Blade's predation effect gives the party extra damage and lifesteal. Society Of Gaming notes that Experienced Counter-Strike is essentially the same buff as the Templar's Fury, so the two do not stack in one party. Grobs adds that a perfectly timed Gladiator block triggers the same party damage buff as a Templar's, so good block timing protects the Gladiator and raises the group's damage at once.

Stigmas

Stigma skills are special abilities of which only a limited number can be equipped, and only a few can be upgraded past a certain level (see Skills, Stigmas and Macros). xMontu, noting in August 2026 that the number of slots on the global version was not yet known, lists the seven Gladiator Stigmas he sees most: Lunge Stance, which raises combat and movement speed and can take a second off every cooldown on a critical hit; a blessing that raises attack and accuracy; Wave Armor; Life-Stealing Blade; Rage Burst; Focused Block, a block that guarantees a parry and restores mana, stamina and health; and Blade Toss, which lowers an enemy's defense and healing by 30% for 10 seconds.

NC's class overhaul of Mar 25, 2026 in Korea and Taiwan gave the Gladiator a new Stigma, Fracturing Rush, as one of a set added "to highlight each class's unique identity". The same update raised the Stigma slot limit to five and introduced Perfect Parry and Perfect Shield Block.

Sen's guide of July 2026 treats Rage Burst as the key Stigma: in his footage it hits for over 20,000 damage, wounds the target for 10 seconds, raises the Gladiator's PvE damage by 20% and PvP damage by 10%, and triggers Overhead Slam. He says that by then a character on the Korean and Taiwanese servers could equip six Stigmas, having started with four and then five, and that the Gladiator's blessing buff had recently changed from a party buff to a self-buff.

PvP

Creators agree that the Gladiator is formidable in PvP. Grobs points to its combination of tankiness, lifesteal, heavy damage and a great deal of crowd control, which makes it strong in almost every kind of PvP content. Sen's PvP preset adds a Stigma with a 75% chance to seal a target, silencing it for 5 seconds.

Society Of Gaming calls the Gladiator the king of one-versus-one and small-scale PvP, a place it has shared with the Assassin since launch. In large battles, especially in the flying open world, he finds that ranged classes such as the Sorcerer, Ranger and Spiritmaster have the advantage over melee, although in his all-classes guide of September 2026 he reports seeing Gladiators do well in large-scale fights in the Abyss as well (see PvP).

Gladiator or Templar

Society Of Gaming's comparison gives the Gladiator the edge in damage and solo play and leaves the main-tank role to the Templar. On the Ascension Trial ranking list he shows, the fastest Gladiator clears take 49 to 57 seconds against 57 seconds to just over a minute for Templars, although both handle the solo content comfortably (see Nightmare and Ascension Trial). In the ten-player Sanctuary parties he shows, Gladiators appear alongside Templars, and he sums up the difference as the Gladiator being played far more aggressively. Grobs notes that groups usually prefer the Templar's extra mitigation while they are learning a raid, and that a Gladiator can be as good or better once they know the mechanics (see Sanctuary Raids).

Balance changes

The Gladiator's standing has moved with patches in Korea and Taiwan. Society Of Gaming recalls a period, some three or four months before his videos of September 2026, when the class sat awkwardly between tank and damage dealer; the developers then trimmed the party buff from Experienced Counter-Strike while raising the Gladiator's attack, and he now counts it among the best classes in the game. SywoGG, by contrast, says it has been at the top of the rankings from the first day. The March 2026 overhaul, which separated PvP and PvE damage calculations and stopped Immune and Immortal effects from being chained within 30 seconds, applied to the Gladiator as to every class.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Gladiator tank in Aion 2? Yes. Grobs says it can tank everything from normal dungeons to end-game raids, with less defensive mitigation than a Templar but more damage and lifesteal.

What weapon does the Gladiator use? A two-handed greatsword. Unlike the original Aion's Gladiator, it cannot use a polearm.

Is the Gladiator good for beginners? Creators think so. CrusherXGaming calls it the safest melee start because it heals from the damage it deals, and SywoGG lists it first among the easiest classes to play.

Does the Gladiator's party buff stack with the Templar's? No. Society Of Gaming says Experienced Counter-Strike and the Templar's Fury are essentially the same buff and do not stack.

Which Stigma did the March 2026 overhaul add for the Gladiator? Fracturing Rush, added in Korea and Taiwan on Mar 25, 2026.

Is the Gladiator good in PvP? Yes, especially in duels and small fights, where creators rate it among the best; ranged classes tend to have the advantage in large battles.

Can I play a Gladiator on the global version? Yes. It is one of the eight global classes, playable since Advanced Access opened on Sep 30, 2026 and free to everyone from Oct 5.
