Combat System
How fights work in Aion 2: manual hit-confirm combat without auto-combat, the Aion 1 and Aion 2 control modes, lock-on targeting, rear hits, dodges, parries and blocks, chained skills, MP, boss stagger bars, separate PvE and PvP damage, and what testers of the global client made of it in September 2026.
Combat in Aion 2 is manual and sits between tab-targeting and action: players lock on to a target and let skills land, but they also have to move, dodge and time their defenses, and there is no auto-combat. NC describes "a hit-confirm system with no auto-combat" and, for the global version, "fast-paced combat that blends precision, timing, and positioning with traditional tab-targeting". Society Of Gaming, who has played on the Korean and Taiwanese servers since launch, calls it "a hybrid between tab targeting combat and action combat". Which skills a class uses and how they level is covered on Skills, Stigmas and Macros; fighting in the air is on Flight and Wings.

Manual, hit-confirm combat
NC's first gameplay reveal of June 2025 listed "manual combat controls that offer skill-based, action-packed gameplay" and the hit-confirm system among Aion 2's pillars, and its launch announcement of November 2025 promised "dynamic manual combat with responsive hit detection". Fextralife's combat page, built on what the June 2025 focus group test confirmed, says attacks have clear telegraphs, that dodging is critical, and that the sequel adds rear-hit detection to the original Aion's mechanics.
Society Of Gaming's breakdown of the pre-launch footage, from October 2025, starts with targeting. A character locks on to its target, marked with a small white circle, and keeps hitting it whichever way the character is facing, even in the Fire Temple boss fight, "so it's not pure action combat".
Nor is it pure tab-targeting. Movement brings in action elements: "there is a dodge, there is a parry, you can see this blink". His conclusion is that the combat is "neither action, neither tab", and that the camera a player chooses decides which way it leans.
Reviewers weigh the mix differently. Grobs, after 250 hours on the Korean servers (December 2025), calls Aion 2 "a true tab target combat with a pretty good action combat mode", and criticizes the skill queue that lets several abilities share one key, which he says makes PvE too simple, though PvP still asks for situational play.
kets and his games, reviewing the Korean launch in November 2025, reads it the other way: "mostly action-based with a focus on chaining skills together", with some skills usable on the move and a dodge against enemy attacks, not as fast as Black Desert Online but only slightly slower than Throne and Liberty.
Control modes
The settings offer Control Mode Aion 2 and Control Mode Aion 1, and a player can switch between them at any time. Aion 1 mode keeps the mouse cursor on screen, turns the camera by clicking and dragging, allows click-to-move and targets manually with the mouse, much like the original game. Skills can be clicked on the bar.
In Aion 2 mode the cursor is hidden until Alt is pressed or a menu is opened, the camera turns with the character, and movement is on the keyboard or a virtual pad. Society Of Gaming began in Aion 1 mode as a veteran of the original but switched, because the fast, mobile fights feel "much more responsive" in the newer mode, and he suggests trying both. The targeting settings in Aion 2 mode have many options and a reset button.
Fextralife's pre-launch notes name the same split as Action Mode (non-targeting) and Classic Mode (Aion-like targeting), with matching view modes: Action for PvE and raids, Classic favored in PvP.
Controllers are a gray area on the global version. NC America told Wccftech in September 2026 that controllers are supported, but NC's Launch FAQ of Sep 30, 2026 says the game is playable with a controller while controllers are "not officially supported", and the Steam store page lists no controller support (see Platforms).
In practice the test client played on a pad. Steam Flow, testing the Launch Scale Test build on a Steam Deck on Sep 17, 2026, found that combat, movement and flying all work on a controller and feel natural, while menus and the inventory still expect a mouse cursor.
Chains, dodges and animation lock
CrusherXGaming's class overview of August 2026 lists what sits on top of targeting: skill chains, abilities that change on the same hotkey as they are pressed, and timed dodges "with real invincibility frames". The catch is animation lock: commit to a long attack at the wrong moment "and you simply cannot dodge what's coming next". Fextralife adds that chain skills appear on screen and must be triggered quickly for full damage, and that every class has area attacks and benefits from back attacks.
The same creator's pre-launch guide of September 2026 treats boss walls as timing problems as much as gear problems. Dodge rolls grant invulnerability when timed well; on a delayed connection, he advises dodging a little early and not starting long abilities as a big attack winds up.
On NC's dungeon stream of Sep 4, 2026 the presenters, fighting through the Fire Temple, talk about learning "that perfect dodge and the parry", which one says "feels awesome" once the timing clicks. NC added the defensive mechanics Perfect Shield Block and Perfect Parry in Korea and Taiwan on Mar 25, 2026, in the same update that stopped Immune and Immortal effects being applied again within 30 seconds.
Positioning and rear hits
Attacking from behind pays. Fextralife describes rear-hit detection "which allows players to deal more damage with backstabs", and NC's update of May 13, 2026 added a boss rear-indicator display to the Korean and Taiwanese versions. Fextralife also notes fast movement with class-specific dashes, raid mechanics that can be dodged with good timing, and underwater combat with a breath gauge.
The rule is not the same for every class. Sen's Gladiator guide of July 2026, recorded on the Taiwanese servers, points to a passive that was recently changed to boost frontal damage: Gladiators "want to be in front, not in the back".
MP and resources
Most abilities cost MP. Grobs's beginner guide of November 2025 explains that the left mouse button, the basic attack, regenerates MP by default, while most other skills spend it. Fextralife's focus group notes say there are no MP potions: MP returns through basic attacks or by waiting, which puts weight on managing each class's resources in PvE and PvP.
Stagger
Bosses have a stagger bar under their health bar. A developer on the dungeon stream explains that each class deals a different amount of stagger, which matters when building a group, and that a staggered boss gives the party about five seconds to "unleash", with a spell that can be cast only during the stagger.
Ynoki's Cleric guide of July 2026 shows the same bar in blue beneath a boss's health. The more stagger damage a party's skills deal, the faster it drains to zero, when the boss is stunned and the ultimate skill becomes available. Some bosses wipe the group unless they are staggered in time, so high-stagger skills are worth saving for that moment. BoredAF's Transcendence Dungeons guide of December 2025 shows one: at about 20% health the final boss of Deus Research Base becomes staggerable, and the party must stagger him before he breaks the platform.
PvE and PvP damage
On Mar 25, 2026 NC separated PvP and PvE damage calculations in Korea and Taiwan and adjusted skills to narrow damage gaps between them. Players keep different skill setups for each: on NC's PvP stream a developer describes presets that swap gear, wings and skills between a PvE and a PvP build. For the global version NC said on its Aug 7, 2026 stream that 10v10 battlegrounds equalize skill levels and stats, and that open-world PvP can be switched on or off outside the Abyss; see PvP.
NC also announced in March 2026 a Combat Power value alongside item level and a feature, tentatively called Combat Analysis, to measure a character's damage per second. The eight launch classes and their roles are on Classes.
First impressions on the global client
Testers of the global client in the Launch Scale Test of Sep 17 and 18, 2026 disagreed about the combat. mein-mmo's Sophia Weiss, a Final Fantasy XIV player who had thought action combat too tiring for her, found the hybrid great fun: on her Gladiator the light attack sat on the left mouse button and the heavy one on the right, with special attacks woven in between as they came off cooldown. Kevin Link of S4G, after twelve hours and level 30, wrote that the combat "feels right": abilities work well together, hits have weight and the pacing is good. He called first flight the highlight of the test, because fighting in the air uses the full combat system (see Flight and Wings).
MassivelyOP's Tyler F.M. Edwards called the combat his biggest disappointment. Offering both tab-targeting and an action mode, which he likened to the soft lock of The Elder Scrolls Online rather than true action combat, left both modes "a bit undercooked" in his view. Action mode needs too many keybinds, sprinting out of combat works only by dodging rather than on its own key, and there is no active block mechanic, even for shield classes. Many attacks lacked impact, which he put down mostly to sound design without bass, worst on the physical classes, and the early game was far too easy, with most enemies dying in two or three clicks. He did like the contextual skills that light up after events such as a critical hit, and the occasional harder boss showed him what the combat could do when the full toolkit is needed. S4G could not find a mouse-sensitivity setting in the test client's otherwise extensive settings.
Creators who played the test split the same way. CrusherXGaming, on the Asian server, found that combat "feels great" and chaining through skill rotations smooth; his one drawback was dodging, where "every so often you'll feel a slight input delay". He also points to the two camera views, over-the-shoulder and the wider default.
Spid, who reached the test's level cap after playing in Taiwan and Korea, called combat the part where the game lacks most. Players mainly use the left and right mouse buttons, macros deal more damage than playing by hand, and the result is "very simple, very easy, one-clicky"; he found melee targeting clunky and ranged play much better.
The camera was TheLazyPeon's biggest complaint. Having tried the over-the-shoulder view, tab targeting and the Aion 1 control scheme, he still could not stand a camera he called "horrendously mobiley", close to a deal breaker for him. His verdict at the end of the video still called the combat "way more fun than I expected".
The complaint is specific: the camera's zoom is tied to its field of view, so the further a player zooms in, the less of the scene they can see.
Jolsn, who played a Ranger for 10 to 11 hours in the test, found combat designed around conditionals, with status effects enabling other skills, and a dodge that runs on a stamina bar. He judged its responsiveness an improvement on Throne and Liberty but far from World of Warcraft, and felt that with macros players do not have to press their buttons much, which to him did not feel like a PC-first MMORPG. He found the Aion 2 control mode better to play than the tab-targeting Aion 1 mode, which he called a little clunky.
Trunx, who played a Gladiator for 12 hours, came away enthusiastic. Combat is positional, with back attacks hitting harder, boss fights ask players to read telegraphs in the middle of a skill chain, and he would not call it auto combat at all; he found it "buttery smooth" and easily one of the best parts of the game.
Kentaro, comparing the test with the Korean client, found boss fights a little better on the global client, where there appears to be more delay between a telegraph and the attack landing on the character.
Latency matters. TheLazyPeon, on about 100 ms to the servers in Japan, called Aion 2 a "very ping sensitive game", and Sen, who learned it at 170 to 200 ms in Taiwan, found the global servers far more responsive, with cleaner combos and faster animation canceling (see Servers).
On the first day of Advanced Access, Sep 30, 2026, mein-mmo's Karsten Scholz described the fights as action-packed and very fast, but what bothered him most was that spectacularly introduced bosses fell within seconds; he counted the camera and the fairly simple skill system among the signs of the game's mobile heritage (see Skills, Stigmas and Macros).
Frequently asked questions
Is Aion 2 tab-target or action combat? Both. Targets are locked on, as in tab-targeting, but players dodge, parry, block and move constantly. Which side it leans toward depends on the control mode and camera.
Does Aion 2 have auto-combat? No. NC describes manual combat with hit confirmation and no auto-combat.
What are Control Mode Aion 1 and Aion 2? Aion 1 mode keeps the cursor visible with click-to-move and mouse targeting; Aion 2 mode hides the cursor, moves with the keyboard and turns the camera with the character. They can be switched at any time in the settings.
Do attacks from behind deal more damage? Generally yes: Aion 2 has rear-hit detection, and bosses show a rear indicator. Some class passives change this; in mid-2026 the Gladiator's rewarded frontal attacks.
Are there MP potions? Fextralife's focus group notes say no. MP returns through basic attacks and over time.
What does staggering a boss do? Emptying the stagger bar stuns the boss for a few seconds, opens a special damage skill and, on some bosses, stops a wipe mechanic.
Can you play Aion 2 with a controller? On the global version it is playable with one, but NC's Launch FAQ of Sep 30, 2026 says controllers are not officially supported.
What did testers think of the combat on the global client? Opinions split after the September 2026 Launch Scale Test. S4G wrote that it "feels right", mein-mmo and CrusherXGaming found it fun, and Sen felt the weight behind the abilities, while MassivelyOP called both control modes undercooked and missed an active block, Spid found it too simple, and TheLazyPeon disliked the camera.
