Nightmare and Ascension Trial
Aion 2's solo boss content: Nightmare's one-on-one bosses in seasonal layers with ten levels each, Phantasmal Fragments, Pantheon statues and rankings, and the timed Ascension Trial with its difficulties, Doom mode, rewards and three weekly runs.
Nightmare and Ascension Trial are the two solo boss modes of Aion 2's endgame, fought by one player without a party. Nightmare is a ladder of one-on-one boss fights that Society Of Gaming calls a solo dungeon players will run a great deal at maximum level; Ascension Trial is a timed solo run through rooms of monsters to a final boss, limited to three runs a week. Both sit in NC's solo content beside the open-world Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds, both were closed in the Launch Scale Test, and the wider dungeon system is described on Dungeons.

Solo content in NC's plans
NC's first map of Aion 2's combat content, shown at the Aion2NIGHT livestream of Aug 8, 2025, lists four solo modes: Nightmare Dungeon, Seal Dungeon, Garrison and Awakening Battle (NC, Aug 12, 2025). NC's English release of January 2026 uses the name Ascension Trial, and none of the sources used here says whether that is the mode first announced as Awakening Battle. Hardcore Gamer's Summer Game Fest preview of June 2026 lists Nightmare as solo one-on-one boss battles that are good for practice (Hardcore Gamer, Jun 16, 2026).
Nightmare
In NC's global preview livestream of Aug 7, 2026 the hosts describe Nightmare as a mode in which a player engages bosses one on one. The bosses come from the story or from dungeons and are repurposed for these solo fights, so that a player can learn their mechanics, explore a class and find out whether their damage is high enough or whether they are being killed in one hit, choosing between several levels.
The difficulty climbs to tier 10, and one host uses Nightmare mostly for practice: the fights contain mechanics that also appear in Expedition, Transcendence and Sanctuary, and nobody is watching when a player fails. The host notes that a Cleric built for damage rather than healing would get further, and a co-host points out that a squishy class such as a Ranger dies to a single missed dodge where a Cleric can heal through (see Classes).
Nightmare is organized in layers, one for every season. By August 2026 the Korean and Taiwanese servers had four, while the global version starts with the first. Each fight is simply the player against a boss at a chosen grade; the higher the grade, the better the reward, paid in Phantasmal Fragments for the Nightmare trade shop.
Every boss has ten levels, and a player must complete all ten on one boss before the next becomes available. Failed attempts can simply be retried, attempts recharge daily, and once a boss is beaten an instant clear ticket can collect its rewards again without the fight.
Anders gives the numbers for the Korean version in September 2026: two entries a day, which stack up to 14, so a week's runs can be saved; a larger reward for the first clear of each level than for repeats; and one exception to the ten-level rule, the final boss of global season 1, which has a single level. He reports that NC describes Nightmare as a training ground, and he agrees that it is the best place to practice a class without holding up a party.
Rewards, statues and rankings
Phantasmal Fragments buy materials that drive a character's growth: amplification stones for gear, soul codices for soul binding and its reset, soul crystals for the pet system and Wisdom Stones that raise skill levels, along with Nightmare wings and armor and earring skins. Anders adds Daevanion crystals and skill points to the shop's stock. The mode also ranks players by how fast they clear each level, and Anders describes season rankings for the fastest clear of the final boss's highest level (see Daevanion Boards and Enhancement and Soul Imprint).
A final boss waits at the end of each layer. Beating it lets a player buy that season's statue, which goes into the Pantheon, a personal trophy room of statues and portraits whose collection adds stats. Society Of Gaming counts the statue among the main reasons to play Nightmare in the endgame.
Nightmare updates in Korea and Taiwan
The fan translation of the Korean patch notes of Dec 9, 2025 records the ranking points for defeating Nightmare's final boss being raised (Patch Notes, Fextralife). NC's Season 2 roadmap announced new dungeons for Nightmare and Ascension Trial from Jan 21, 2026 (NC, Jan 7, 2026; Season 2).
Reading NC's Korean teaser page for Season 2 in January 2026, aLuckyRO counted seven new Nightmare bosses and a new final boss in place of the Season 1 one.
The Chapter 1 update of Jul 1, 2026 brought new bosses in Nightmare Layer IV and changed how rewards are paid: clearing a given stage now grants the combined rewards of all the stages before it (NC, Jul 6, 2026; Chapter 1: Lands of Sand and Snow).
Ascension Trial
NC's Season 2 roadmap introduced two Ascension Trial dungeons, Depository of Fates and Tyrant's Hideout, on Jan 21, 2026, and promised class-based rankings for Ascension Trial and the Daily Dungeon (NC, Jan 7, 2026). Chapter 1 added a Doom difficulty that opens at item level 4,000 (NC, Jul 6, 2026).
Anders explains the format. A player can run Ascension Trial three times a week per character, clearing the monsters in each zone and then the final boss against a timer; optional objectives along the way buff the player and weaken the boss. Higher difficulties give more rewards but raise the level of the monsters, from 45 on Easy to 75 at the top in Korea. The score combines the clear with the time left, multiplied by the difficulty. A run counts the moment the player enters, so dying too often or running out of time wastes one of the three, and the main reason to play is Stigma shards, for which Ascension Trial and Transcendence are the best sources (see Skills, Stigmas and Macros).
MR4KTV's advice follows from that rule. Because a failed attempt still counts, he suggests waiting until late in the weekly cycle, when a character's item level has risen, before spending the three attempts. Ascension Trial also has rankings that reward titles, and players can inspect the gear, item level and combat power of those on the board. In his run, clearing the monsters sometimes, but not always, granted a buff.
Society Of Gaming lists the rewards of the three weekly runs on the Korean and Taiwanese servers: manastones, fragments for the Daevanion boards, a material that can be exchanged for Kina, and Unstable Stigma Shards, which are morphed into Stigma shards to improve Stigma skills (see Gear Progression).
Solo play and classes
NC introduced the Spiritmaster in June 2025 as the class "optimized for solo play" (NC, Jun 4, 2025); the class is also translated Elementalist.
EPIC PLK's account of a solo dungeon in July 2026 shows what that means in practice, though he does not name the dungeon. Entering at the proper level and not over-geared, he was killed by one of the bosses; he switched to a tankier summon, stayed further back and won, finishing the whole dungeon alone. On most other classes, he says, he would have left and waited for a party, although a Cleric might have healed its way through slowly (Spiritmaster; Cleric).
On the global version
Both modes were locked in the free Launch Scale Test of Sep 17 and 18, 2026. Society Of Gaming hesitates to call Nightmare a dungeon at all, describing it as solo content in which players defeat bosses at different levels, and describes Ascension Trial as clearing a few rooms at a chosen difficulty three times a week. On the global servers, open to Founder's Pack buyers in Advanced Access since Sep 30, 2026 and to everyone from Oct 5, Nightmare starts with its first layer, whose final boss has a single level, according to Anders; NC told Hardcore Gamer that the global version will run close to a year behind Korea in content (Hardcore Gamer, Jun 16, 2026; Global Release). NC's launch notices confirm Nightmare by name: the Planet's Call pass, whose missions and rewards run to the Oct 27, 2026 maintenance, hands out Nightmare Dungeon Challenge Tickets (Bound), as well as Unknown Fissure Challenge Tickets (NC; Daeva Pass).
Frequently asked questions

How many Nightmare attempts do you get? In the Korean version, two a day, stacking up to 14, according to Anders; attempts recharge daily.
How often can you run Ascension Trial? Three times a week per character. A run counts as soon as you enter, even if you fail.
What is Doom difficulty? A difficulty for Ascension Trial added in Korea and Taiwan with Chapter 1 on Jul 1, 2026, open from item level 4,000.
What does Nightmare reward? Phantasmal Fragments to spend in the Nightmare shop on upgrade materials, skill materials, wings and skins, plus a season statue from the final boss that adds stats in the Pantheon.
Could you play Nightmare or Ascension Trial in the Launch Scale Test? No. Both were closed in the test of Sep 17 and 18, 2026.
