Templar

The Templar of Aion 2: the sword-and-shield main tank, with taunts and pulls, party protection, the Fury buff on block, its Judgment rotation, the Battlefield Banner Stigma, tanking dungeons and Sanctuary raids, and front-line PvP.

The Templar is the main tank of Aion 2, a melee class armed with a sword and shield whose job is to hold enemies' attention, protect the party and survive. It is one of the eight launch classes, playable in Korea and Taiwan since Nov 19, 2025 and on the global servers since Advanced Access opened on Sep 30, 2026, ahead of the free-to-play launch on Oct 5. NC describes it simply as the "core tanking role". In Grobs's summary a Templar holds aggro, pulls enemies together, protects and amplifies its teammates and is very hard to kill, yet also deals a lot of damage for a tank. The other tank is the Gladiator, and all the classes are compared on Classes.

On the global servers

The Templar is one of the eight classes of the global client, under that name. In Ruca777's all-classes showcase, uploaded on Sep 30, 2026 as Advanced Access opened, a level 30 Templar takes on the same boss as the other seven classes in a dark red arena, with the full interface on screen.

CrusherXGaming's global tier list of Sep 28, 2026 puts the Templar in A tier, slower on its own but a guaranteed party spot: "With the first raid growing to 10 players, every raid group wants a steady Templar." XifanGG's list of the next day ranks it S tier and almost irreplaceable for raid progression. aLuckyRO traces rumors that the global Templar was balanced differently from Korea's to a bug on the test client.

Role

On NC's global release preview livestream of Aug 7, 2026, a presenter described the Templar as the more traditional tank: a class focused on blocking that buffs its party members with armor and shields, suited to someone who wants to be a traditional tanking leader. The Fextralife wiki describes a front-line tank with strong defense and crowd control.

OmniPower's profile is a melee tank that keeps facing the boss and contributes defense, control and support. Its core identity is to block, control and protect, it excels at survival and protecting the party, and he recommends it to players who enjoy leading encounters and do not mind the responsibility.

Holding aggro and protecting the party

CrusherXGaming calls the Templar the only true tank on the roster, with a kit built for one job: making sure the boss looks at the Templar instead of the healer. Vicious Strike is the threat filler chained constantly to build aggro, another skill locks a target onto the Templar, Doom Shield is the panic button when a boss winds up, and further skills cover the players behind. SywoGG adds that the Templar keeps aggro easily, mostly thanks to a taunt skill, and has three mobility skills, all of them part of his preferred build.

In PvE, Grobs explains, the Templar holds aggro and amplifies the team's damage: it can lower an enemy's defense so that everyone hits harder, and correctly blocking certain boss attacks activates a damage buff for the whole party. It also carries defensive tools for the party as well as itself, including the ability to redirect damage from teammates onto the Templar, which he singles out as very helpful when progressing through raids. OmniPower's buff rotation includes Comrade in Arms, which raises his own and the party's damage tolerance, and Second Skin for himself, while Taunt pulls a target and reduces its accuracy and attack.

Blocking and Fury

Blocking is at the heart of the class. Society Of Gaming shows the Templar's party buff Fury, which raises frontal attack damage and PvE and PvP damage for the Templar and its party for 20 seconds when the Templar blocks. The Gladiator's Experienced Counter-Strike works the same way, and the two do not stack in one party. SywoGG notes that the Templar is incentivized to block actively rather than simply absorb hits, and NC's class overhaul of Mar 25, 2026 introduced Perfect Shield Block as a new defensive mechanic. Not every first impression of the global client agrees: after the Launch Scale Test of September 2026, MassivelyOP's Tyler F.M. Edwards wrote that the game has no active block mechanic, "even for shield classes" (see Combat System).

Skills and rotation

OmniPower builds his Templar around Judgment, which he calls its bread-and-butter skill and which can only be used after a shield skill such as Shield Smite, Warning Strike, Shield Rush or Doom Shield. Shield Smite can stun; Warning Strike grants a buff and restores some health; Pommel is the spammable area attack; Doom Shield closes the gap and grants a buff; Executing Blade lowers enemy defenses, as does Debilitating Smash, which becomes available after a block or a landed Shield Smite; Punishment deals heavy damage with a large buff; Annihilate hits stunned or knocked-down targets; and Shield Rush, usable only after a dodge or in mid-flight, closes the gap with a stun. Another gap closer can either pull the enemy to the Templar or take the Templar to the enemy, rooting the target (see Skills, Stigmas and Macros).

A tank that deals damage?

Creators disagree about the Templar's damage. CrusherXGaming says it has the fewest hard-hitting skills in the game by design, that groups will always take one, and that solo questing feels slow all the way to the level cap; he recommends it to players who enjoy reading a fight and pressing exactly the right cooldown at the right second.

Grobs takes the opposite view. The Templar deals genuinely high damage, can almost compete with the bigger damage dealers when built offensively, and is completely fine in solo content such as open-world farming and solo bosses; because it is so tanky, forgetting to block is rarely fatal. Society Of Gaming's comparison sits between the two: a Templar's damage is lower than a Gladiator's and its Ascension Trial clears are a few seconds slower, but it handles solo content safely (see Nightmare and Ascension Trial).

Tanking dungeons and Sanctuaries

The Templar is the natural tank for Aion 2's hardest group content. Society Of Gaming shows the party listings for a ten-player Sanctuary raid, where Templars and Gladiators appear in most groups alongside the mandatory Cleric, and says that anyone who wants to main tank end-game content should play a Templar (see Sanctuary Raids). Grobs notes that groups usually prefer a Templar while they are still learning a raid, because its extra mitigation makes progression safer. Since Jul 1, 2026 in Korea, and from launch on the global servers, Expedition and Transcendence parties have five players and Sanctuary raids ten.

SywoGG rates the Templar two out of five for difficulty when tanking raids and one out of five for everything else. He considers it one of the most casual-friendly classes, one on which mistakes are generally tolerated, and says it feels strong and useful with several defensive buffs and a few offensive ones.

PvP

In PvP, Grobs says, a Templar can either become an almost unkillable tank that annoys everyone and keeps opponents crowd-controlled, or build fully offensively and kill players itself, in duels and large battles alike.

Society Of Gaming finds the Templar decent in large-scale PvP despite the limits of a melee class, because its pull has a good range: it drags enemies in and holds the front line, which is also its place in the Abyss. SywoGG describes the same role in group and zerg fights, where a Templar front-lines, crowd-controls and trolls opponents with its pulls (see PvP).

Battlefield Banner and the March 2026 overhaul

NC's class overhaul of Mar 25, 2026 in Korea and Taiwan gave the Templar a new Stigma skill, Battlefield Banner, one of a set added "to highlight each class's unique identity". None of the sources used here describes what the skill does. The same update raised the maximum number of Stigma slots to five, introduced Perfect Shield Block and Perfect Parry, stopped Immune and Immortal effects from being applied consecutively within a 30-second window, and separated PvP and PvE damage calculations.

Templar or Gladiator

Society Of Gaming sums up the choice between the two tanks. The Gladiator is an off-tank and damage class played far more aggressively, while the Templar is Aion 2's main tank and the class for players who want a truly tanky feel. Both come with strong defenses by default, which he says lets players push attack in their builds, and he considers both worth playing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Templar the main tank in Aion 2? Yes. NC calls it the "core tanking role", and creators treat it as the default tank for raids.

What weapon does the Templar use? A sword and shield.

Can a Templar play solo? Yes, though creators differ on the pace. Grobs finds it fine in all solo content, while CrusherXGaming finds solo questing slow.

Does the Templar's Fury stack with the Gladiator's buff? No. Society Of Gaming says Fury and Experienced Counter-Strike are essentially the same buff and do not stack.

Is the Templar hard to play? SywoGG rates it two out of five when tanking raids and one out of five otherwise, and considers it casual-friendly.

What did the March 2026 overhaul give the Templar? A new Stigma skill, Battlefield Banner, along with the Perfect Shield Block mechanic introduced by the same update.

Can I play a Templar on the global version? Yes. It is one of the eight global classes, playable since Advanced Access opened on Sep 30, 2026 and free to everyone from Oct 5.
