Chaotic Abyss
The Chaotic Abyss of Aion 2's Korean and Taiwanese servers: the March 2026 split into West and East forces, Chaotic Lower, Middle and Upper Reshanta, the layer without flight, the capped layer, Abyss time limits, and what reaches the global launch.
The Chaotic Abyss is the reworked Realm-versus-Realm system that NC added to the Abyss of Aion 2 in Korea and Taiwan on Mar 25, 2026, dividing players into West and East forces at server level instead of by race. Its maps are layers of Reshanta, the war zone between the two factions' lands described on The Abyss (Reshanta); aLuckyRO's tour of April 2026 opens on the rebuilt Chaotic Middle layer, which a lot of viewers had asked to see. Anders names the layers Chaotic Lower, Middle and Upper Reshanta, and only the lower one is expected at the global launch. The artifact battles fought on these maps are covered on Artifact Siege, and player-versus-player content as a whole on PvP.

West and East forces
NC's release of Mar 25, 2026 calls the Chaotic Abyss "a newly designed PvP system that reinterprets traditional RvR gameplay". Instead of race-based factions, "players are divided into West and East forces at the server level, engaging in large-scale battles regardless of race alignment", while the Spacetime Rift keeps its race-based matchmaking. The same update separated PvP and PvE damage calculations and stopped Immune and Immortal effects from being applied back to back within 30 seconds (NC).
Since Elyos and Asmodians play on separate servers, the Abyss depends on pairing servers well. ExitLag Tips' explainer of August 2026 says NC has matched servers using combat activity, Abyss kills and siege performance, and warns that the system seen in Korea and Taiwan could still change before the global launch. NC's own release of Mar 11, 2026 announced a fourth round of server matching "to promote more balanced Abyss gameplay" (NC), and the fan site aion2hub records further Abyss server rematches in June and July 2026. NC's Korean update notes list two more just before the global launch, on Aug 26 and Sep 9, 2026, each of which reset the ownership of every artifact and Abyss Corridor (NC; NC).
The creators who filmed the new layers still speak in faction terms: aLuckyRO, an Asmodian player, describes one base as the Asmodians' and the other as the Elyos'.
Chaotic Middle Reshanta: a layer without flight
Middle Reshanta has come and gone. Fextralife's translations of the Korean notes record its entry requirement being raised to gear level 3,500 on Nov 22, 2025, with a promise to remove it from the current season, and its removal from the world map by Dec 9, 2025. Xela's summary of the Season 2 roadmap describes the middle-layer war that players had in launch week in Taiwan being taken out and brought back, and NC's roadmap of Jan 7, 2026 confirmed that Middle Reshanta, with item-level entry restrictions, would be activated in Season 2 (NC).
By April 2026 the layer had been rebuilt again as Chaotic Middle Reshanta. aLuckyRO found the map and its structures changed and the rule that defines the layer in place: nobody can fly there. His map shows a base at each end and three artifacts, all held by the Elyos at the time, and he demonstrates that wings only let players glide. Anders gives the entry requirements as level 45 and 3,000 item level, and notes that the layer adds three more artifact nodes to fight over.
Quest monsters on the layer are tough for an under-geared character but pay well; aLuckyRO earns 300 Abyss Points for one kill. Without flight the terrain becomes a hazard, and a player who steps off an edge falls to their death.
aLuckyRO welcomes the change. Flying PvP looks exciting in videos, he argues, but plays badly, while ground combat brings back kiting and makes items such as running scrolls matter again, advantages that flight used to erase. The layer also has a boss on each side of the map.
By May 2026 Society Of Gaming described two open-world PvP maps in the Korean and Taiwanese Abyss: one where players fly freely and one where they can only glide. The fan site aion2hub reports that the update of Apr 15, 2026 added a wind path to the middle layer.
Chaotic Upper Reshanta: the capped layer
Chaotic Upper Reshanta arrived with Chapter 1: Lands of Sand and Snow on Jul 1, 2026. NC describes it as "a zone where item level and combat power are capped, and no bosses or Artifacts appear" (NC). Anders calls it technically a capped Abyss map and gives the numbers: characters must be level 45 with an item level of 4,300 or less and a combat power of 400,000 or less. Anyone who goes over is removed from the map at once and loses an hour of Abyss time as a penalty. Item level and combat power are explained on Gear Progression.
The Abyss Rift Zone
The last Korean Abyss map in Anders's list is the Abyss Rift Zone, which he describes as more of an event map for organized battles, not confirmed for the global launch. ExitLag Tips describes it as large-scale fighting against a field boss, with rewards shared out by player performance. The fan site aion2hub dates its debut as an event to Jun 17, 2026 and a rework into a faction-integrated battle to Jul 15, 2026. NC's Korean notes of Jul 15 confirm the size change that came with it: each faction's maximum was cut from 400 against 400 to 300 players (NC). On Sep 9 its bosses were strengthened, fewer in number and given larger rewards, and eight of them now turn invulnerable for 25 seconds at low health (NC). It is separate from the Spacetime Rift, the portal system between the factions' home maps.
Abyss time
Time in these maps is rationed. Anders explains that players without membership get seven hours a week, each map has its own timer, and in Korea the membership doubles the allowance to 14 hours; a craftable item extends the stay. In his video on NC's global membership announcement of August 2026, he pointed out that the Abyss time extension was not among the listed benefits, and NC's revised benefit list of Sep 28, 2026 still does not include it (NC; Membership).
The Chaotic Abyss and the global version
The global version, in Advanced Access since Sep 30, 2026 and open to everyone from Oct 5 (Global Release), starts smaller. According to Anders, the Abyss is always-on PvP with no toggle, and global players get one map at launch, Chaotic Lower Reshanta, which needs level 45 and 1,000 item level. NC's global team confirmed the always-on rule in its preview stream of August 2026. The global servers start with the older, race-based model: NC's matchmaking post of Sep 29, 2026 pairs each Elyos server with an Asmodian server for the Abyss and Spacetime Rifts, changes the pairings periodically, and says nothing of West and East forces (NC on Steam; Servers). The Abyss shown in NC's PvP stream of September 2026 likewise has an Elyos base and an Asmodian base. NC's global team told Hardcore Gamer in June 2026 that the global version will be "close to a year behind" Korea in content (Hardcore Gamer), so the middle and upper layers are expected later. Nobody reached the Abyss in the Launch Scale Test of Sep 17 and 18, 2026, which capped characters at level 37.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Chaotic Abyss in Aion 2? A Realm-versus-Realm system introduced in Korea and Taiwan on Mar 25, 2026. It divides players into West and East forces at server level rather than by race, and fights over the layers of Reshanta.
Can you fly in Chaotic Middle Reshanta? No. The rebuilt layer allows only gliding, so falls can be fatal and fights happen on the ground.
What are the entry limits for Chaotic Upper Reshanta? Level 45, with item level and combat power capped. Anders gives the caps as 4,300 item level and 400,000 combat power, and says exceeding them removes a player and costs an hour of Abyss time.
Does the Chaotic Abyss change the Spacetime Rift? No. NC said the Spacetime Rift would continue to use race-based matchmaking.
Is the Chaotic Abyss in the global version? The global launch opens with Chaotic Lower Reshanta only, according to Anders. NC's global matchmaking pairs Elyos servers with Asmodian servers; it has not announced West and East forces for the global version.
How long can you stay in the Abyss? Seven hours a week per map for players without membership on the Korean servers, and 14 with it. NC's list of global membership benefits (updated Sep 28, 2026) includes no extra Abyss time.
